Outdoor Education

A wide range of activities beyond the classroom is offered. All of these may be seen as extension opportunities. Some form part of the academic or social education programme; others offer scope for physical or cultural experiences; all contribute to the students’ development.

Camps

Year 12 Camp

This is a week-long expedition which mixes the field work associated with practical assessment of academic subjects and outdoor activities. A lodge at National Park provides a central location for the study of elements of Biology, Geography, Physical Education, English, History, Art and Tourism. Abseiling, caving and tramping experiences are included. The programme also includes a Retreat for all the Year 12 students.

Year 10 Camp

This outdoor education camp is held at the end of the Year 10 year. This provides experience in living and co-operating as a group. It also provides the opportunity to sample or further develop experience in abseiling, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing and orienteering.

Year 8 Camp

Year 8 classes experience an Outdoor Education week which includes an overnight camp. This helps to form the girls into their new classes for the year and gives an opportunity to be involved in education in the environment outside the classroom. The overnight camp is usually at a residential venue and parent help is most necessary.

Retreats

Year 9-13 students have retreats as part of their Religious Education programme.

Lake Pupuke

The College is very fortunate in having a wide frontage on to Lake Pupuke. The passive presence of this water is a constant reminder to students of the beauty of nature. It also is the centre for water-based activities.

The Year 7 & 8 students, in common with neighbouring schools, participate in the Waterwise Programme. Windsurfing and kayaking are available as extra-curricular activities for secondary-level students.

Rowing teams compete for the College, with coaching and equipment supplied through individual membership of the North Shore Rowing Club.
