On Monday 11 March, 50 Year 11 Geographers visited Milford Beach.  The aim of the trip was to test the cleanliness of Milford Beach.

The students sampled 23m2 of beach across 3 sample sites, testing for macro and micro plastics.  Sadly, the research confirmed what we feared.  The beach is not clean.  The students identified 1446 pieces of plastic and the average number of plastics were 63 pieces per m2.  The majority of plastics discovered were micro plastics, measuring between 1-4mm.  This data is now being analysed in class for the new Level 1 standard “Explore an environment using data”.
