The New Zealand Ethnic Womens Trust, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, hosted a breakfast at Waipuna Conference Centre to recognise emerging ethnic leaders. Our Carmel nominations represent students from diverse ethnic backgrounds who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service in our Carmel College community.

Roseline Son (Korean) is a member of our student leadership team in 2024 as the Head of Arts and Culture. She has been instrumental in starting new sustainable traditions this year including a student-led culture evening to celebrate and highlight the different cultures in our school through music and dance performances. Roseline started up the very popular K-pop group at Carmel which has now been running for several years. This has introduced many new girls to aspects of Korean culture.
Calli Romano (Filipino) has been a very effective leader in the senior orchestra as first violin. She is a role model for all students in terms of her academic commitment and success, and also for her long service to a range of music groups. Calli has been very involved in numerous student-led clubs and event committees over the past few years.
Melinda Chen (Chinese) is on the student leadership team in 2024 as the Head of Academic. She has been instrumental in starting new sustainable traditions this year, including a student-led after-school tutoring programme and the introduction of a school-wide book week.
Xin Ang Lau (Malaysian Chinese) has been our head librarian in 2024. She is a role model for all students in terms of her academic commitment and success and also for her long service to the senior orchestra. Xin Ang has been very involved in numerous student-led clubs and event committees over the past few years.
