Our senior Volleyball teams have been busy, with both teams competing at Auckland champs where our Premier team placed 5th and our Juniors placed 2nd in Division 4. Eva-Maree Mene-Tuimavave and Lani Rawle were named in the Auckland Secondary Schools Tournament team.
Our Premier team then made its way to Palmerston North for one of the biggest sports events in New Zealand with the 54th New Zealand Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships at CET Arena and Massey University.
With volleyball on a rapid rise in schools across the motu, the 2024 event has jumped 20% in participating teams; up to 198 in total with 103 girls’ teams joined by 95 boys’ teams over five days of competition. The increase in teams echoes the latest School Sport NZ Census information which shows volleyball has again strengthened its rangatahi base – now the second most popular school sport for girls in Aotearoa – with an 11% rise in participation over the last two years.
Carmel had our best ever result finishing 5th in NZ over the 5 days of play. The girls came together and put on a show of hard work and discipline. A huge thanks to our four Year 13 players who leave us now after 5 years of volleyball inspiration, loyalty and leadership.
Congratulations to Captain, Lani Rawle, for being named in the NZSS Tournament team.
