The 2024 Year 8 Eco Fashion Show dazzled the crowd with a stunning showcase of 60 unique garments, thoughtfully designed by the talented Year 8 students. As the models confidently took to the catwalk, their fellow designers captivated the audience by sharing the inspiration and creative process behind their eco-friendly creations. This year’s designs pushed the boundaries of imagination and sustainability, making it no easy task for the esteemed panel of judges—Mrs Elizabeth Walker, Carmel DP and renowned seamstress, along with Mrs Robyn Hunn, Head of Technology. After much deliberation, the winners were finally revealed, leaving the audience in awe of the incredible talent on display.
And the winners are:
Red Carpet
First place and Overall Winner – Group number 7 – Cristal Cheng, Erin Walker and Caitlyn Theron with their creation, ‘Flowers of the Future’. It was inspired by the Balmain 2024 Spring Collection and ‘represents a future if we choose to do nothing about climate change’.
Runner-up – Group number 2 – Alexandria Campbell, Julieta Sosa, Faith Tulifau and Ocēane Stanfield. Their garment was called ‘Barbie’, and was ‘inspired by Marilyn Munroe’s iconic pink dress’.
Book Theme
First place – Group number 3 – Aurora Edhouse, Sophie Mulqueeny, Lynella Kako and Iris Ritto. Their creation, ‘A sensation of Roses’ was inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast. They incorporated the French setting from the Disney film and ‘included pages from old books to show Belle’s love of reading.
Runner-up – Group number 9 – Sophie Bell-Booth, Lily Turnbull and Amelia Furtado. Their design was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. They sourced some of their fabric from deadstock curtain material.
Sci-Fi
First place – Group number 11 – Elena Rotaeche, Gerayne Chow and Alice Zhang. Their Solar System inspired outfit was named ‘Cosmic Ring’. The girls wanted to ‘showcase the beauty of our solar system and galaxy in our eco-friendly dress’.
Runner-up – Group number 1 – Zara Querido, Vanessa Li and Cadence Pepito. Their design was named ‘Avena’, which means alien or newcomer and was inspired by the classic Sci-Fi movie ‘Trope’.
Arts
First place – Group number 8 – Lydia Zhang, Rachel Zhang, Eva Chen and Anya Dickinson. Their garment ‘Sea of Sky’ was inspired by van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog’ by Caspar Friedrich. ‘The night sky is littered with darts and the horizon claims a vast ocean of its own.’
Runner-up – Group number 6 – Audrina Morales, Anushka Gonsalves and Isumi Kuruppu. Their design ‘brought the painting of ‘Joan of Arc’ made by John Everett Millais, to life’. ‘We wanted to show her beauty and bravery through our design while also using recycled materials’.
