From the Principal

As we quickly settle into the new school year, we are thankful that yesterday we were able to gather as a school community to dedicate our 2025 school year to God at our Dedication Mass and celebrate the Mass with our students, staff, Board members and guests, including current and new families to our community.

This year is even more special as it is also a Jubilee year called by Pope Francis for the church to participate in.  The Jubilee year happens every 25 years, so it is very significant – a time of renewal, reconciliation and gratitude.  As Pilgrims of Hope we are asked to take this opportunity to celebrate, give thanks and be instruments of peace and respect in our communities.

Every year we focus our attention on one of our five Mercy values.  This year, our core Mercy value is Whakaute Respect.  For our community this is defined as we show respect when we affirm the dignity of each person; celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and care for creation.

At the Mass our 2025 student leaders were blessed and received their badges.  This team of student leaders have willingly offered their skills and talents in the service of others.  They will build on the legacy of those who have previously served in these positions and they, in turn, will leave their own legacy for others to continue.

Our 2025 student leadership team is:

  • Head Girls – Chelsea Brown and Lily Dwyer
  • Heads of Special Character – Kriya D’Sa and Auriel Straka
  • Heads of Academic – Angela Braganza and Yoana Ho
  • Heads of Arts & Culture – Helena Lee and Abigail Street
  • Heads of Council – Tanna van Rensburg and Sophie Barreto
  • Heads of Sport – Annie Gaylard and Maisey Lendrum
  • Heads of Alexandra House – Isabelle Esnouf and Kirsten Barberini
  • Heads of Cecilia Maher – Ruby Railton and Phoenix Rockell
  • Heads of Justine House – Millie Lloyd and Jane Nolloth
  • Heads of Kelly House – Eloise Dance and Neve Harvey

  • Heads of McAuley House – Amber Lee and Georgia Thorpe
  • International Student Representative – Jiwon Lee

I wish this team of student leaders all the very best for the year ahead and look forward to working alongside them.

Yesterday we also held our ‘Meet the dean, atawhai and core learning group teachers’ for new students and families in our community.  The afternoon was an important opportunity for us to connect with one another as we believe that the best outcomes for students come when teachers, parents and the school community work together as partners in the educational journey.

A key aspect of our partnership lies in communication.  To all of our parents and caregivers, your involvement in your daughter’s education is invaluable.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please do not hesitate to reach out.  We want to ensure and be able to assist in times when needed, so that your daughter feels valued, encouraged and empowered every step of the way on her educational journey here at Carmel College.

Next week we are looking forward to Athletics Day on Tuesday 18 February at Onewa Domain.  However, please do be aware that at this stage the weather forecast is not looking favourable.  A decision will be made and communicated via email and on the school social media pages by 6.30am on Tuesday morning if athletics is cancelled due to poor weather.
