Voices: Kāhui Ako Student Magazine – New issue out now!

We would love to have submissions of student writing.  Please use the forms on the website to submit your work or enter the writing competitions that we run each issue.

Our highlighted story for this issue is the Kapa Haka Showcase which took place at Rosmini College on Thursday 29 August.

Kapa Haka Kāhui Ako Showcase

On 26 August the Carmel College Kapa Haka rōpū performed at Rosmini College for the annual Kāhui Ako showcase.  There were seven schools performing, which included Stella Maris Primary, St Leo’s Primary, St Joseph’s Primary, St John’s, St Mary’s Primary, Carmel College and Rosmini College.  Each school undertook a short performance including a haka and waiata.

First went the primary schools.  There was a common waiata called Toia Mai, which each primary performed in a different way.   Many of the primary schools also performed a haka.  Several students had a leadership role of calling and they did exceptionally well.  Two Stella Maris students spoke their pepeha.  We were extremely impressed by the talent of the rōpū and children expressing Māori culture.

Next up was Carmel, then Rosmini.  We performed a waiata called Tenei Matou, which was a happy and joyful song about coming together.  Afterwards, we performed our Carmel College haka, written by Mihirangi Fleming, who came into our school to teach us this haka in 2023.  This was powerful and meaningful.  Rosmini performed a few waiata, including one called Ka Noho Au. They also performed an extremely powerful haka.

Thank you to Mr Cooper, Matua Maurice and the teachers who helped organise practices.   A big thank you to all the students who performed and put many hours into their performances.
