On Friday 16 August, our team of school peer mediators had the exciting opportunity to attend a Peace Symposium run by The Peace Foundation. This day focused on bringing schools from across the region together to showcase their efforts and creativity in promoting harmony and understanding. During the day we listened to a variety of speakers about how they show peace in the world today. This was a great way to be introduced to how we can show peace in our everyday lives. A highlight of these speakers was Cam Calkoen who recounted how he used his courage to work towards his dreams while promoting peace.
We also saw a presentation by the talented students from a wide range of schools in Auckland, who shared their innovative activities and initiatives. The students’ enthusiasm was infectious as they recounted their experiences of working in collaborative groups to introduce new methods of celebrating Peace Week, and introduce new mindful activities in their schools, like folding origami, mufti day, painting peace rocks and making friendship bracelets.
We had the opportunity to work in mixed groups to design personalised tote bags and create inspiring peace icons for the future. The projects highlighted the power of teamwork and creative expression in spreading the message of peace.
Our peer mediators were particularly inspired by the fresh ideas and approaches demonstrated by other schools. We’re thrilled to bring these new insights back to Carmel College and look forward to incorporating them into next year’s Peace Week. From collaborative art projects to interactive workshops, we have a range of exciting plans in store to make our first Peace Week even more impactful.
