Reducing Food Waste at Carmel College: What Can We Do?

At Carmel College, we’re committed to sustainability, and one way we’re already making a difference is by composting some of our food scraps.  However, we don’t have enough worm bins to take all of the scraps we generate.  So, what more can we do?

1. Composting More

While we’re already composting some of our food scraps, we could do even more if we had additional worm bins or composting systems.  This would allow us to recycle more organic waste and create nutrient-rich soil for our school gardens.

2. Feeding Animals

Many of our food scraps, like vegetable peelings and stale bread, could be used to feed animals such as pigs or chickens.  If anyone in the Carmel College community has animals that could benefit from these scraps, we could create a collection system to help.

3. Recycling and Reducing Waste

We can continue to separate food scraps from general waste to make it easier to compost or recycle.  Reducing food waste in this way helps reduce our environmental impact and supports sustainability.

How Can You Help?

If you know someone with pigs, chickens, or a composting system, or if you have ideas for increasing our worm bins, we’d love to hear from you!  Please get in touch with Ginny Peek  gpeek@carmel.school.nz.  Let’s work together to find ways to handle more of our food scraps and make Carmel College an even more eco-friendly place.

By taking small steps, we can make a big difference for the environment and our community!
