My sister, Phoebe and I are both lifeguards and coaches at Omaha Beach. This requires us to patrol both Saturday and Sunday every month during summer from 11am-5pm. We also coach surf lifesaving to younger kids (7-9 years), Sunday mornings at 9am.
Being trusted by the community to keep them and their families safe was a huge responsibility, but all the time and effort I put into patrolling and keeping the beach safe was well worth it. Being a lifeguard also involves caring for the environment and others around me. If we see someone not respecting others or the environment we are told to take action by speaking to them. Coaching surf lifesaving to kids has given me confidence and also lets me build their confidence in the water. It’s an amazing feeling when you are watching them gain a better understanding about surf lifesaving and seeing them gain confidence in the water.
I love working on the beach and have really enjoyed giving back to the community, spending time helping those who need it and making sure people at the beach are safe.
